Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a Simple Yet Festive DIY Wreath
Dia de Los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday celebrated in remembrance of deceased loved ones. The holiday falls on November 1st and 2nd and is traditionally observed with family gatherings, prayers, food, drink, and celebrations. While the holiday originates in Aztec culture, it has since been adopted by many other cultures worldwide.
One of the most recognizable symbols of Dia de Los Muertos is the Calavera or skull. Calaveras often decorate altars or ofrendas (offerings) for the dead. They can also be found adorning clothes, jewelry, and other items associated with the holiday. In this blog post, in two simple steps, we'll show you how to make your own Calavera wreath to help celebrate Dia de Los Muertos.
What You'll Need:
Wooden Dia de Los Muertos Silhouette (which can be found at most Dollar Tree stores)
Hot Glue Gun
White Paint
Paintbrush
Begin by painting your Dia de Los Muertos silhouette. This can be done however you like; feel free to get creative! We decided to paint the skeleton portion white and leave the rest bare to let the color of the dried naturals pop. Once your silhouette is dry, set it aside.
Once the paint is dry, use your hot glue gun to attach your dried flowers to the silhouette. You can cover the frame, decorate the Calavera in patterns, design flowers, glue dried flowers onto the entire profile, or do minimal gluing; the choice is yours! We used elements from our fall mini dried flower bouquets, but feel free to get creative and use whatever dried naturals you like. Keep adding details until you're happy with the look.
Now that you've finished your Dia de Los Muertos wreath, it's time to hang it up and enjoy! This is a great way to bring some Day of the Dead cheer into your home, making it a beautiful addition to any altar or ofrenda. Plus, it's a great conversation starter - when guests see your wreath, they'll be sure to ask you about its meaning and significance. So go ahead and proudly display your wreath. After all, it reflects your own personal Day of the Dead tradition.
