Acquaint Yourself with Pampas Grass

Maybe you’re a leader of home décor trends, or someone who wants to give their home an upgrade and doesn’t know where to begin, this dried natural has the capability to flex with you and your design. Pampas grass, with its light and feathery nature, can fill that empty corner with texture or make a statement piece on the dresser. It’s billowy usually neutral in color, also found dyed to beautiful jewel tones, is a perfect match to any design aesthetic. It creates a calming feeling with its airy and delicate nature, bringing the outdoors inside.

Where did this lovely plant get its roots? Native to South America, pampas grass is named after the plains of Pampas where it is prevalent. It emerged in California by sailors during the Gold Rush and was made famous by Joseph Sexton, the first overseas exporter. Pampas grass could be seen bedecked on parade carriages, hats of women, and even as you enjoyed peanuts at the circus.

How do you care for your pampas? First, take it to a place where you can shake each frond to release the excess seeds and fluff, this will get messy. Then you’ll coat with hairspray to reduce shedding, any brand will do. Following these steps will help to keep that pampas grass looking as fresh as the day it entered your home!

You’ve now prepped your pampas grass, applied hairspray to it, and it’s ready to go. What’s next? Almost as important as the pampas itself is the vase that holds this lovely grass. If you desire an elevated aesthetic, shop for a vase that is taller to hold the long stalks upright. A skinny opening keeps the stems bunched together, making the arrangement look full, but if you have a vase that you love with a wide rim, just fill the bottom with sand or pebbles. Pampas grass on the kitchen table is glorious, but keep in mind conversation flow, you may want to clip your grass shorter and place it in a wide, circular vase so the stems spill over and create an expansive arrangement. There are so many options. Follow your design aesthetic, choose your favorite vase and place the voluminous dried natural where is can be admired daily. Also, if you want to add more texture, dried naturals pair well with other dried naturals. We’ve coupled ours with Lavender, Wheat, and even Scented Bowl Fillers for different looks to swoon over.

After you've created your unique design, we would love to see it, so tag @bindleandbrass in your photo.
